Yes. Abecca Design is a direct manufacturer: every piece of Abecca furniture we sell is made in-house in our Australasian facilities. We have no middlemen, no outsourced production, and no compromises on quality control.
Being the manufacturer means we can offer custom solutions, respond quickly to project requirements, and stand fully behind everything we make. It also means responsive lead times: when something needs to happen, we can make it happen.
Abecca Design was founded in 1952. We are a fourth-generation family business with more than 70 years of manufacturing experience. Over that time we have developed and refined our product ranges specifically for mental health, corrections, youth justice, and aged care environments: settings that demand far more than standard commercial furniture.

Absolutely. We offer virtual showroom presentations via Microsoft Teams: a walkthrough of our ranges with our team, tailored to your environment and requirements. Most clients find this the quickest and most useful way to get a clear picture of what’s right for their space.

Anti-ligature furniture is designed to significantly reduce points where cords, clothing, or other materials could be attached and used for self-harm. In conventional furniture, these points are everywhere: legs, frames, fixings, seams, gaps between components.
All our furniture Armadillo®, Eagle™ and Hawk™ is solid foam, with no internal frames, no exposed fixings, no hard edges, and no structural gaps. The result is furniture engineered for high-risk environments: not through added features, but through what is deliberately left out.

We use ultra high-density, medical-grade foam, engineered for comfort, durability, and targeted support. It is suited to healthcare seating, mattresses, and institutional settings. All foam grades are GECA certified and meet strict fire-retardant standards.
LimberShield® is Abecca’s proprietary finish, applied exclusively to the Armadillo® range. It creates a seam-free, waterproof, antibacterial, and fire-resistant surface bonded directly to the foam, rather than applied as a separate layer or coating.
The result is a surface that is highly resistant to damage, cleaning chemicals, and the sustained demands of secure environments. It is one of the key reasons the Armadillo® range carries a 7-year structural warranty.
Yes. All our furniture is suitable for seclusion rooms. The Armadillo® range is our recommended specification for seclusion and high-observation rooms. Its solid foam construction has no internal frame, no hard components, and no structural gaps, significantly reducing the ligature points that make conventional furniture unsuitable for these environments. It is finished with LimberShield® and carries a 7-year structural warranty.
Eagle™ and Hawk™ are also been used in seclusion environments and remain suitable options where they meet your facility’s requirements.

Yes. The Armadillo® Bariatric range includes six pieces: single chair, armchair, barrel chair, tub chair, upright rocking chair, and sensory rocking chair. Each shares the same solid foam construction with no internal frame, the LimberShield® proprietary finish, BS 5852 and BS 7177 fire testing, and a 7-year structural warranty.

Abecca furniture is solid foam throughout, so it is substantially heavier than it might appear. That weight is a by-product of the solid construction, and it helps resist casual misuse.
At the same time, pieces remain easy to reposition, which matters in therapeutic and secure environments: staff can respond quickly and adapt a space when needed. For that reason we do not recommend adding weighting or floor fixings. Ballast and fixing hardware work against that principle and are not part of our recommended specification.

Yes. Standard Armadillo® seating is suitable for aged care common areas and resident rooms, in particular all seating with arms for ease of use.
The Armadillo® Comfort Collection is designed specifically for aged care and community care settings. It features a cushioned seat for additional comfort, with cushions that sit within the chair form. They providing a softer visual feel appropriate for resident environments. Replacement cushions are available from Abecca, and cleaning follows the same protocol as our Eagle™ vinyl range.
The Armadillo® Modular Collection is suited to mental health, corrections, and youth justice settings, but is not recommended for aged care. The Armadillo® Sensory Rocking Chair (AR72) is also not recommended for aged care, as its low, reclined form can be difficult for elderly users to get out of.
Yes, in covered areas. Abecca furniture is well suited to sheltered outdoor spaces such as verandas, covered courtyards, and enclosed decks.
We don’t recommend placing it where it is directly exposed to sunlight. Prolonged exposure to strong UV light, such as that experienced across New Zealand and Australia, can affect surface finishes over time.

Yes, and customisation goes well beyond colour selection. Because we manufacture entirely in-house, we can modify the structure of our products to suit specific environments, spatial constraints, or clinical requirements.
