A bariatric chair isn’t just a bigger chair

Joseph Beatson - Author

When furniture is built around a steel or timber frame, designing for higher loads is a fairly direct exercise. You thicken the sections, strengthen the joints, upgrade the fixings and test the result. The frame does the work, so you make the frame stronger.

That approach makes sense for framed furniture. It also only solves the half of the problem that is easiest to measure.

Armadillo® furniture has no frame to reinforce. Every Armadillo® chair is solid foam: no internal frame, no metal or wooden components, no seams. When we developed the Bariatric range, there was no option to build the same chair with stronger bones. We had to look at how foam itself performs, and how different qualities of foam can be combined and placed to achieve the Safe Working Load each chair is engineered for.

That was the engineering challenge. It wasn’t the most important one.

Design around the person, not the number

A load rating tells you what a chair can carry. It doesn’t tell you how the chair carries it. People carry their weight differently, and where they carry it changes how load moves through the seat, the back and the arms. A chair drawn for a standard body and then scaled up puts its strength in the wrong places, so we started by asking where the load actually goes.

Then there’s the moment most designs overlook: getting in and out. Sitting down and standing up are when a chair is under the most demand, and when the person is most exposed to its shortcomings. For someone with limited mobility, or someone being supported by staff, that transition has to feel stable and predictable. A wider seat doesn’t achieve that by itself.

The part no test can measure

The most important factor, in our view, is belief. Does the person sitting down trust that the chair will hold them?

If they don’t, they perch. They hesitate, brace themselves, lower themselves cautiously, or avoid sitting at all. Many people using our furniture in mental health, aged care, corrections and bariatric care settings are already fragile, and their confidence matters. A chair that looks like a stretched version of a standard design can quietly tell them it wasn’t made with them in mind.

So we changed the design. Our Bariatric chairs are visibly more substantial, with a presence that reassures at a glance. Confidence starts before anyone sits down, and for many people that reassurance is as valuable as the engineering behind it.

A different brief

A bariatric chair isn’t a bigger version of something else. It’s a different brief, one that begins with the person and works back to the material.
